Australia crushed West Indies by 379 runs with a day to spare in the first test at the Gabba today, condemning the tourists to one of their heaviest defeats.

Ricky Ponting's men wrapped up an emphatic victory before tea on the fourth day when the once-mighty West Indians collapsed to be all out for 129 in their second innings.

"We played very well this week and it was a good team performance," a jubilant Ponting said.

"But I'm not sure if the West Indies played as well as they can. We probably expected a little bit more."

The tourists were set a near-impossible 509 to win when Ponting declared overnight but failed to mount any sort of challenge, losing their last eight wickets for just 44 runs to be bowled out in 49 overs.

Meanwhile England's Matthew Hoggard and Ashley Giles warmed up for the first test against Pakistan with seven wickets between them to lead a fightback against the Pakistan A side on the first day of a three-day tour match today.

Hoggard took 4-39 and Giles 3-14 as England, after being bowled out for 126 runs, reduced the local side to 127 for eight at the close with captain Hasan Raza top scoring with 34.

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif finished with seven for 62.

Raza shared a valuable 60-run sixth-wicket stand with wicketkeeper Amin-ur-Rehman (32) to rescue his side from the shaky position of 58 for five.
