The Conservatives should be defeated with an avalanche, not a landslide, the leader of one of Britain's biggest trade unions said today.
Mr John Edmonds, general secretary of the GMB, told delegates at the union's biennial congress in Brighton: "Don't talk of victory on June 7th. We don't want a victory, we want a rout."
Mr Edmonds added: "I gather that Margaret Thatcher is worrying about a landslide for Labour. So am I. After what she and her party did to us over 18 years, forget the landslide - we want an avalanche."
