Average public sector earnings up 5.7% - CSO

The average weekly earnings in the Public Sector (excluding Health) rose by 5

The average weekly earnings in the Public Sector (excluding Health) rose by 5.7 per cent in the year to September 2005 according to figures released this morning by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The index of average earnings, which excludes some effects of changes in employment composition, also rose by 5.7 per cent for the same period.

The figures also showed that employment in the public sector rose by 4,100.

A total of 243,300 people were employed in the Public Sector (excluding Health) in September 2005 compared to 239,200 in September 2004.

Overall employment in the Public Sector was 344,800 in September 2005, an increase of 7,200 compared with September 2004.

Employment in Education increased from 82,500 to 85,300, employment in the Health Sector increased from 98,400 to 101,500 while employment in the Semi-State Sector fell from 57,800 to 57,000 in the same period.
