A documentary by the late Mary Raftery has won an award at the Celtic Media Festival in Derry

A documentary by the late Mary Raftery has won an award at the Celtic Media Festival in Derry. Behind the Walls, a documentary about the harrowing history of the State’s psychiatric hospitals, received a Bronze Torc award for excellence in the factual series category.

The programme by Misha Films for RTÉ was written and produced by Raftery, who died in January.

A film starring West Wing actor Martin Sheen was among the other wins for RTÉ. Stella Days is set in 1950s Ireland and is about the dilemma of the increasingly modern world and the traditions of the church and society. The RTÉ/Newbridge co-production won in the best feature length drama category.

Satirical series The Savage Eye won a bronze award in the entertainment category.
