A baby boy has died following a road crash in Co Meath at about 9pm on Tuesday.
The seven-month-old child was seriously injured in a crash between a car and a van near Cushinstown on the N2 road between Ashbourne and Slane.
The baby was travelling in the back seat with his mother and her sister. The baby's grandmother was in the front with her partner, who was driving the car.
The baby's mother got out of the car with her sister at the side of the road.
A van then struck the car from behind, causing serious injuries to the baby boy in the back seat. He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. Doctors spent the night trying to save the baby's life, but lost the fight early yesterday.
No one else in the incident suffered major injuries. The passengers in the car were returning home to Knockbridge near Dundalk, Co Louth. The van driver was on his way to Slane, Co Meath.
Gardaí were examining the vehicles yesterday and are appealing for information from anyone who was travelling on the N2 on Tuesday evening and may have witnessed this crash to contact Ashbourne gardaí on 01-8010600.
