Severe head injuries sustained in labour which resulted in the death of a baby were described as “very rare” at Dublin Coroner’s Court.
Baby Theo Gibbons, son of Patrick and Nicola Gibbons from Firhouse, was pronounced dead two hours after his birth by C-section at Holles Street Hospital on September 21st, 2008.
Dr Brian Farrell said injuries of that kind had been known to occur during prolonged labour but in very rare cases. He recorded a narrative verdict describing the cause of death as traumatic intrapartum head injuries with the attendant risk factor of prolonged labour.
