An 11-month-old baby boy suffered serious head injuries in a freak accident in Belfast city centre. The child was injured when a concrete slab fell on the car in which he was travelling with his father yesterday morning. The accident happened at about 10.30 a.m. on Victoria Street when the concrete block fell from a city-centre building on to the car, which was stopped at traffic lights. The slab struck the rear of the vehicle where the child was sitting. His father was uninjured but deeply shocked.

The child was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he was later reported to be "out of immediate danger".
