A young mother was being treated for shock in hospital tonight after her baby died in a freak road accident.

The six-week-old boy was killed when a tipper truck collided with and crushed a car being driven by his mother in Dublin.

The accident happened at the entrance to a roundabout close to a new road construction scheme in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.

The tipper truck was depositing soil at the scene when it toppled on to the rear section of the car, where the child was in a baby's seat. The car was stopped in a queue of traffic at the time.

The mother escaped uninjured, and was tonight being comforted by her family and counsellers.

Det Insp Noel Clarke said: "This was a tragic and very unfortunate set of circumstances. The likelihood of it happening must be one in a million."

The drivers of other vehicles in the line of traffic caught up in the accident also had to receive treatment for shock afterwards.
