A woman in her 20s came forward to gardai in north Cork yesterday after the discovery of a new-born baby's body on waste ground in the townland of Knocknagoun, near Rylane.
A man made the discovery yesterday afternoon while out walking his dog.
It is believed the body had been in the ground for some time. The remains were removed to the Cork University Hospital where the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Maire Cassidy, performed a post-mortem.
Father Tom Browne, the parish priest of Aghabullogue, the parish in which the remains were found, described the incident as "a tragedy".
"There are good neighbours here and I know they will do their very best to help. In this area people are very good and caring," he said.
Father Browne said Rylane was a community at a small crossroads with about 150 families in the extended locality. Last night, a woman made contact with local gardai and it is understood she is receiving medical attention and counselling.
