A MAN appeared at a special sitting of Athlone District Court on Saturday last on five charges relating to burglaries in the south Roscommon area.

Mr Aidan Fallon (25), with an address at Rinnegan, Lecarrow, Co Roscommon, was charged with five offences dating from September 1995 to October 12th, 1996, under the Larcenies Act 1916.

He had been initially detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act but had been released after the initial detention period. He was rearrested and charged at 2.22 p.m. on Friday under common law.

Insp Padraig Rhattigan, for the DPP, requested a remand, but the solicitor for the accused man, Mr Eamon Geraghty, made an application for bail. However, this was opposed by the gardai. Det Sgt Fitzmaurice told the court that possible witnesses could face intimidation, as many were old and vulnerable.
