Former Olympic and world 100 metres champion Donovan Bailey of Canada confirmed his retirement last night after he was eliminated in the world championships semi-finals.
"That's it," Bailey said after finishing sixth in the first semi-final. "No more races, no more relays."
Bailey 33, won the 1995 world title in Gothenburg and went on to win the 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold medal in a world record 9.84 seconds. He also anchored the Canadian 4x100 relay team to victory over the United States in Atlanta.
The Jamaican-born Canadian ruptured his left Achilles tendon in 1998. After surgery and extensive rehabilitation he made a full return to international athletics, but he was never able to recapture his form of the mid-90s.
