Dessie Baker, who was released by eircom League champions Shelbourne at the end of last season, has signed for Longford Town.

The move will see Baker reunited with Longford boss Alan Matthews who was assistant manager at Shelbourne before taking up the reigns at Flancare Park.

Baker, whose younger brother Richie is also out-of-contract and had been linked with a move to Shamrock Rovers before moving to America to find a club, has signed a two-year deal with the FAI Cup winners.

The 26-year-old frontman struggled with injury the last two terms but is looking to the future and believes the up-and-coming midlanders, who are still in the market for new signings, can challenge for honours next season.

"It's a fresh start for me and I'm looking forward to getting my career back on track and hopefully I'll get a new lease of life at Flancare Park," Baker said. "I know Alan well and the squad of players he has should see us challenging for more silverware next season."

Matthews, who guided Longford to their first ever trophy last season when they beat St Pat's in the FAI Cup final, is hoping Baker can regain his top form.

"I worked with Dessie for four seasons and know his potential," said Matthews. "He's a good asset to us and he has something to prove to people after his last two seasons which have seen him play very little football."
