JUNIOR CERT CIVIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL EDUCATION:KNOWLEDGE of the Irish political system would have served students well for the civic, social and political education (CSPE) exam.

“Overall, the paper was well balanced between the different elements,” said Brendan O’Regan of the Association of CSPE Teachers.

The written exam yesterday was worth 40 per cent of the overall mark – a further 60 per cent had been completed in the form of a project.

Opening with short questions, the paper asked students to identify photographs of the interiors of public buildings.

The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland subject representative Jeanne Barrett said: “Students had to have studied the Irish political system if they were to do well in the rest of the short questions.”

Section two asked students questions on various issues and campaigns such as the national age card and a drive to encourage people to recycle batteries. Some were more successful than others, according to teachers.
