The alleged mastermind of the Bali nightclub bombings has confessed to planning and executing the attack, an investigator has claimed.
Police arrested Mr Imam Samudra yesterday in the port of Merak, on Indonesia's main island of Java. "He has already confessed," said Gen I Made Mangku Pastika, the chief of the international investigation on Bali.
Authorities now say they are confident that his remaining accomplices will be captured soon.
Mr Samudra (35) is reportedly a leading member of Jemaah Islamiyah, an al-Qaeda ally seeking to impose an Islamic state in southeast Asia.
Mr Samudra's sister identified a police photo as being that of her brother. But she said the family want additional proof that the man in custody is Mr Samudra.
Police said that on Tuesday they detained two of Mr Samudra's guards near his hometown of Serang, who then led them to Mr Samudra.
Gen Pastika say a third man was also detained. Although all three had visited Bali before to the attack to survey potential targets, they were not among the 10 individuals believed to have carried out the bombing, it was claimed.
