The Ballinasloe Horse Fair has been cancelled due to fears of a further outbreak of foot-and-mouth.

The fair was due to take place in the Co Galway town from September 29th to October 7th.

In light of the many new cases of foot-and-mouth in the UK, it was decided the fair should be cancelled rather than put the economy at risk through the traditional influx of horse breeders and dealers from rural parts of Britain to the fair.

The was due to be the 279th year of the event.
