Mr Des Traynor asked Irish Intercontinental Bank to delete any reference to Ansbacher in a loan agreement concerning an Irish property company, the tribunal was told.
An executive of IIB said the bank's response to the request was entirely informed by Mr Traynor's high standing in the banking business. The loan was for £2 million, which was reduced to £1.3 million, and was still outstanding.
Mr John Reynolds, executive director of IIB, said that in November 1990, Mr Traynor, then chairman of Ansbacher, was recommended to the bank by a very reputable source.
Almost immediately after moving the Ansbacher deposits to the bank, Mr Traynor asked IIB to put in place a facility for a client of Ansbacher, an Irish property company. This facility, by way of loan given to the borrower, was to be secured by a guarantee from Ansbacher which in turn would be secured by a cash deposit placed on deposit with IIB's parent company in London.
The bank arranged to draft a facility letter and this was sent to Mr Traynor. It included a security clause which referred to the security being provided by Ansbacher. Mr Traynor, however, asked if the reference to the security could be deleted in its entirety. He wanted no reference made to Ansbacher.
The bank refused but sent a further facility incorporating an alternative wording for the security clause which would protect the bank.
Counsel for the tribunal Mr Jerry Healy SC asked whether the bank would have "looked askance" at the request were it not for the standing of Mr Traynor.
Mr Reynolds replied: "Two circumstances - Mr Traynor's standing and the fact that we were lending to a company whose principal was somebody again of prominence and repute."
Later, Mr Liam Donlon, a director of IIB, said he was not surprised by Mr Traynor's request. Such a request was made from time to time but the bank would never accede to it.
Asked why Mr Traynor would make such a request, Mr Donlon agreed one reason could have been to keep the transaction confidential or secret.
Mr Donlon also confirmed he met Mr Traynor to arrange the initial transfer of Ansbacher funds from Guinness & Mahon to IIB in 1990.
