Strike action by up to 500 employees at Bank of Ireland has been called off, with trade union representatives seeking clarity on a Labour Court decision on merit-based payments to staff.

The dispute centres on a Labour Court recommendation, issued in June, that the bank pay cost of living and individual performance pay awards, in line with agreed procedures dating back over many years and in line with payments already made to most Bank of Ireland staff.

Union representatives will return to the Labour Court to seek final clarity on the ruling. Unions say the bank's refusal to implement the ruling is at the heart of the dispute.

"We will be looking at a co-ordinated approach between other unions so that if Bank of Ireland continues to ignore the Labour Court, then further action will be taken to cause maximum impact”, Unite regional officer, Colm Quinlan said.

"We believe that by turning down the temperature for a brief period that it will allow the bank to reflect on its position and come to the right conclusion".

The union says the group of staff involved, most of whom are on salaries of less than €30,000, have taken a decrease in wages of 12 per cent this year due to the non-payment of company-related performance payments.

Tomorrow's deferred action was to have followed on from a one day strike that took place in July.
