Barclays said this morning the head of its UK banking operations, Roger Davis, was leaving, and would be replaced by Gary Hoffman, currently head of the bank's credit card unit.
Britain's third-largest bank also unveiled a series of new appointments at its domestic business, which is the bank's biggest profit provider but at the retail level is struggling to grow amid a slowdown in consumer spending and rising bad debts.
Mr Davis, who is a member of Barclays' executive board, will step down on December 8th, but will remain available to the group until October next year.
Mr Davis leaves Barclays employment from April 1st but he will be entitled to payment of £500,000 and a 100 per cent bonus for the following 12 months.
A spokesman for the bank said it was Mr Davis' decision to leave.
In addition to Mr Hoffman's promotion, Barclays also named former Citigroup executive Antony Jenkins as chief executive of Barclaycard, Deanna Oppenheimer as the chief executive of UK Retail and Peter Harvey as the chief executive of UK Business Banking.
Mr Hoffman, who has also been made Chairman of Barclaycard, has been at the bank for 23 years. "It is a disappointment that Davis has gone," one analyst, who declined to be named, said.
