Barman 'stable' after being shot in Dublin raid

Two masked and armed men burst into the Lagoona Bar at around 10.30pm. One of the raiders threatened some 20 customers with a handgun while the other forced staff to hand over cash.

During the raid the barman, from Eastern Europe, was shot in the shoulder with a shotgun. He was taken to Beaumont hospital where is condition is described as "stable".

Gardaí recovered some money outside the bar after it was dropped by the raiders. Gardaí told ireland.comthe men escaped in the direction of Sheriff Street. The bar was evacuated and sealed off for technical examination.

The bar is located on Custom House Square, opposite the National College of Ireland. It's owner, Thomas Smith, was robbed at gunpoint in the early hours of St Patrick's Day as he returned to his home in Castleknock in Dublin with the night's takings.

The raiders drove off in a silver Volkswagon Passat car and were pursued by the gardaí helicopter.

Gardaí arrested the men in Mulhuddart, north Dublin, after a 30-minute high-speed chase.

Mr Smith is also the owner of two pubs in Temple Bar - Farringtons and The Auld Dubliner.
