Martin Bashir has denied betraying Michael Jackson in his interview with the star.
The journalist was answering questions on a live ITV.com webchat about the making of Living With Michael Jackson, screened on ITV1 and TV3 last week.
Mr Bashir said "it wasn't a traumatic experience" for Jackson but that "press coverage has been difficult for him.
"If concerns are expressed about the way he behaves with children and it makes him careful in the future then that's a good thing," he said.
Mr Bashir hit back at Jackson's claims that he had been unfairly portrayed in the programme. He said: "I don't believe that I've betrayed Michael Jackson at all. I agreed that we would make an honest film about his life.
"There's been allegations about distortion and misrepresentation and I refute them all. The film was fair to his musical achievement and gave him every opportunity to explain himself".
Mr Bashir discussed how 12-year-old Gavin was introduced to him during filming and that the boy's relationship with Jackson caused him "deep concern."
He said: "Here's an individual who is 44 years old, sleeping in the bed of children who have no biological relationship with him. "I'm not accusing anybody of being a child molester or a paedophile. All I'm saying is that was a concern".
Jackson has signed a deal with Fox television in the United States to air his rebuttal to Mr Bashir's documentary. Fox said it would air a two-hour special on February 20th featuring Jackson's own footage of Martin Bashir, who is seen telling him: "Your relationship with your children is spectacular". PA
