Police in the Basque country this evening defused a bomb placed on a road and programmed to be detonated via a remote device when a vehicle drove by, police said.

The explosive device, made up six to seven kilogrammes of the dynamite Titadyn, had been laid near the town of Murueta, in the Basque province of Bizkaia.

The regional Basque police, who have opened an investigation, believe that the bomb had been placed with the intention of committing a targeted strike.

ETA committed two attacks in France in recent years using the Titadyn industrial dynamite.
