Bayern Munich virtually assured themselves of a place in the last eight of the Champions League with a 3-0 win over Spartak Moscow tonight.
Two goals by Mehmet Scholl, one in each half, put Bayern 2-0 ahead after 75 minutes and substitute Paulo Sergio finished off the Muscovitesthree minutes from time.
Bayern's win, on an icy pitch in sub-zero degree weather, also just about killed off any hopes Spartak may have had of qualifying from Group C.
It was Bayern's second win over Spartak in eight days after their 1-0 win in Munich last week.
Bayern top the group with 10 points from four matches, followed by Arsenal on 4 (from 3), Olympique Lyon on 3 (from 3) and Spartak on 3 (from4).
"We had the advantage today that Spartak had to open up completely so we had the chance to counter-attack," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeldsaid. "We were lucky at the start that they did not take their chances."
