Beginning of the affair

Lights, cameras, action - Hollywood comes to town

Lights, cameras, action - Hollywood comes to town. The dazzlers on Wednesday night include not only the leading stars of Neil Jordan's film The End of the Affair, but also Dublin's rich, glamorous and famous who are also out in force at the Savoy Cinema for the film's gala premiere.

The President, Mrs McAleese, is present for the screening. And before the lights go down, Jordan, the film's director, introduces us to the leading actors in the story's love triangle - Ralph Fiennes, Julianne Moore, Stephen Rea and Ian Hart who plays the private detective in the film.

As to the others in this galaxy of stars who roll up for the night, a quick roll-call should suffice - in alphabetical order, of course. Those spotted walking down the red carpet include Orla Brady of A Love Divided, in a long tangerine coat; Elaine Cassidy of Felicia's Journey and her older sister Edelle; artist Fionnuala Ni Chiosain; Mary Coughlan with her "very good friend" Loretta Moran; Barry Devlin, script-writer; Marianne Faithfull who says she usually likes comedies but came out smiling after the screening; Brenda Fricker in a dark trouser-suit; Gavin Friday in shades; Miss Ireland Emir Holohan-Doyle in a long, gold, strappy dress; designer Lainey Keogh; Paul McGuinness with his family; Gerry Ryan and his wife Morah who looks beautiful in an outfit of pale pinks, greens, lilacs, orange and blue which was "thrown together"; Jim Sheridan, director; Gerry Stembridge, who says afterwards it was a "great, old-fashioned film". Those with stamina partied afterwards at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham.
