A prisoners' aid centre on Belfast's Newtonards Road was searched today by the PSNI as part of a widening inquiry into loyalist paramilitary money laundering.

Computers, financial records and bundles of documents were seized from the Gae Lairn project in east Belfast, after the premises was scoured by detectives investigating deposed Ulster Defence Association(UDA) boss Jim Gray.

It is understood police based their raid on a detailed intelligence assessment, and the PSNI confirmed that it was "in relation to serious crime."

Council and planning buildings, solicitors, accountants and political offices have also been raided. But the latest trawl has focused on the community-based centre on the staunchly Protestant Newtownards Road.
