Police in the North are no longer treating the death of an American backpacker in Belfast as murder, it emerged today.

A PSNI spokeswoman said a woman, arrested following the death of Ashley Rowland (29) from New Mexico, had now been released on police bail.

Ms Rowland died near Queen's University after sustaining a head injury at Fitzwilliam Street on Sunday evening close to the hostel in which she had been staying.

The PSNI said on Monday they were treating the death as murder and had started a murder investigation. Today they said initial investigations did not support the idea that a murder had been committed and officers were continuing to investigate the cause of the 29-year-old's death.
