The producer of a film set in Northern Ireland is suing a major US studio for £70 million sterling.

Mr Jerome O'Connor's court action in Los Angeles accuses DreamWorks, co-owned by Steven Spielberg, of suppressing the film An Everlasting Pieceto appease British officials.

The lawsuit originally sought only £7 million when filed in February in New York.

Mr O'Connor claims he had an agreement with DreamWorks to distribute An Everlasting Piecein 800 US cinemas but it was shown on only eight screens and earned a paltry £52,000 before being removed.

DreamWorks has called the suit "patently ludicrous."

The movie is a comedy about two rival wig companies in 1980s Belfast.

It stars Bryan F.O'Byrne and Barry McEvoy and focuses on the rivalry between two barbers on both sides of the divide whose wig-selling escapades bring them into comic contact with the British army and the IRA.

Although the movie opened to favourable reviews earlier this year Mr O'Connor told the press Steven Spielberg had become uneasy about possible political sensitivities and tried to bury the movie.

DreamWorks dismissed this and said a limited release had been planned for the movie from the start.
