A "wrecking crew" in West Belfast was accused of trying to set alight to a leisure centre undergoing renovation.

A "wrecking crew" in West Belfast was accused of trying to set alight to a leisure centre undergoing renovation.

The Northern Ireland Fire Service and police were summoned to the Whiterock Leisure Centre at around 7.45pm last night to deal with the fire on the roof of the building.

The Fire Service said although the leisure centre had sustained some damage to the roof, the fire had been brought under control.

Sinn Féin Assembly member Michael Ferguson said the fire had followed a number of antisocial behaviour incidents over the past 24 hours.
