Police in Belfast have arrested a man for questioning in connection with the mugging of a pensioner who later died in hospital.

James Connor (67) was attacked, struck on the head and robbed of his wallet in broad daylight in an alleyway near a city centre pub on Wednesday.

The results of a postmortem to establish the cause of death could result in the investigation being upgraded to a murder inquiry.

Police are linking the incident with a second mugging of a pensioner in the vicinity a short time after the assault on Mr Connor.

The man arrested yesterday is said to be in his late 30s.

Det Insp Jeff Smyth had earlier called on the assailant to "examine his conscience" and "do the right thing and give himself up".

The PSNI has released CCTV film showing Mr Connor's attacker being pursued by a passerby before he threw away the stolen wallet. The wallet was later recovered.

The Connor family is said to be devastated. Local politicians and lobby groups for the elderly have expressed outrage.

DUP Lord' Mayor Wallace Brown said he was appalled, while Alliance Assembly member Naomi Long called on the police, the local District Policing Partnership and the public to tackle crime and the fear of crime, especially among the elderly.

Help The Aged spokesman Séamus Lynch said: "The fact that the attacker was clearly preying on the more vulnerable members of our society, and that he carried out the attack . . . in broad daylight, is something that should be of real concern to us all."
