Four persons "belonging to a radical Islamic movement" were arrested in Brussels yesterday in connection with terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, police officials said today.

"Until now, no link has been established with the bin Laden movement," said a spokesman for the prosecutor's office, but added that Uzi-type automatic weapons and magazines of ammunition had been found and seized during searches.

He referred to Osama bin Laden, the Saudi millionaire believed hiding in Afghanistan who the United States considers a prime suspect behind Tuesday's attacks.

The spokesman said two of the four, whose identities and nationalities were not given, were being held, while the other two were released.

Dutch police arrested four people yesterday in the port city of Rotterdam suspected of being members of a radical Islamic network, prosecutors said today.

Mr Leendert de Lange, spokesman for the Dutch Prosecutor's office, confirmed the arrests had been made but could not immediately tell Reuters whether they were related to US terror attacks this week.
