Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier watched Milan Baros and Florent Sinama-Pongolle make returns from injury for the club's reserves on Monday night.
Baros, who had not played since breaking an ankle in September, completed 63 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle at the Liverpool Academy.
Sinama-Pongolle, returning after six games out with a groin injury, was withdrawn after an hour with cramp.
Liverpool led until the dying seconds following a superb long-range effort by Danny Murphy, who also hit the bar earlier in the game. Shola Ameobi scored Newcastle's late equaliser, also from outside the box.
Craig Bellamy continued his comeback for Newcastle with another full match having played 15 minutes in the Premiership against Birmingham on Saturday.
Both sides fielded strong line-ups. Liverpool had Baros, Sinama-Pongolle, Murphy, John Arne Riise, Igor Biscan and Djimi Traore on show, while Newcastle fielded Bellamy, Lee Bowyer, Hugo Viana, Titus Bramble, Ameobi, Robbie Elliott and Andy Griffin.
