Khartoum - The Sudanese President, Mr Omar al-Beshir, said yesterday that he had declared a state of emergency to end chaos like that of the regime he overthrew in 1989, denying it amounted to a fresh coup.
Mr Beshir declared a three-month state of emergency on Sunday and announced the dissolution of parliament before a vote on Tuesday to curb his powers under the leadership of parliamentary speaker, Mr Hassan al-Turabi. He denied Mr Turabi's claim that it was tantamount to a new coup.
