Thirty-two children held hostage in the Beslan school siege last year and their families are spending ten days in Barretstown on a rehabilitation programme.

More than 360 people died in a botched operation by Russian forces to rescue children and staff from Chechen militants in School No. 1 in the North Ossetian town last September.

Of those killed, 172 were children and 30 were Chechen terrorists.

The children visiting the Co Kildare castle include Ilona Khubayeva (8) who spent six months in hospital having surgery and recovering after the siege. Her mother and brother were both killed.

Six-year-old Dana Koniyeva lost her mother in the attack. Her aunt Svetlana Sokolova (36) was also in the siege and now looks after her.

Many of the other children visiting this week also lost family members.

Larissa Aziyeva (43) taught English at the school. She suffered multiple facial injuries when being rescued by Special Forces from the Chechen fighters who tried to use her as a human shield.

The Barretstown programme is being funded by the From Russia with Love programme, which raised €600,000 in the aftermath of the siege.

The rest of the money will go towards a resource centre called Broken Flower, which will train psychologists directly in Beslan, and toward building a new playground.

To Russia With Love and Barretstown have already worked together to bring children with serious illnesses from the Briyansk region of Russia to Ireland.
