Best night of the year to view the moon

After a week of drizzly/savage conditions, the weather outlook for the weekend is bright, and mild. There may be the odd shower but Met Éireann say the mixture of cloud and sunshine will see highest temperatures ranging between a respectable 13 and 17 C.

If the clouds hold off this evening then we are likely to get the best night of the year to view the moon. Astronomy Ireland are setting up powerful telescopes in Dublin, Cork and Roscommon to show the public "the closest views they are likely to get in their lives of the surface of the moon."

The editor of Astronomy Ireland’s magazine Mr David Moore says that you don’t just get to see the craters on the moon, you get to see the mountains inside the craters. Sounds like something on a friend of mine’s neck but it’s not - it’s another amazing world with a uniquely beautiful landscape and well worth a look.

A new platform opens at Heuston Station today. On Friday services only, the 1.35 p.m. from Heuston to Tralee, and the 3.55p.m. from Heuston will depart from this new platform - platform 10. Customers should allow extra time to transfer to the platform.

AA Roadwatch says there are no delays to trains on intercity, suburban and DART services. Irish Ferries and Stena Line services are also running to schedule and there are no major delays at Dublin, Cork or Shannon Airports.
