BRITAIN: Football legend George Best was charged with drink-driving yesterday, Scotland Yard said.
The former Manchester United star and Northern Ireland international was stopped by police on the A3 in Merton, south-west London, at around 12.20 a.m.
It is understood he was stopped after allegedly being seen to be driving erratically.
Best was arrested and taken to a police station, where he was given a breath-test.
He was charged with "driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit", police said.
Best (57) was released on bail at around 6 a.m. yesterday. He will appear before Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The star was understood to be staying at a former girlfriend's house in Surrey this morning.
His estranged wife Alex is currently in the Australian Outback, taking part in the reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
Best has had a troubled time in the last few months after reportedly hitting the bottle again after years of struggling with alcoholism.
He underwent a life-saving liver transplant over a year ago. - (PA)
