Joe Kinnear, David O'Leary and Peter Reid have all attracted support to replace Mick McCarthy but yesterday's hot tip was former England skipper Robson.

A statement from leading bookmakers Ladbrokes said the firm had been "inundated with four-figure bets on the new Republic of Ireland manager.

"Peter Reid's odds have been slashed after lots of support but there has been an even bigger plunge on Bryan Robson," it said.

"The former Middlesbrough manager's odds have been dramatically slashed, making him the new favourite. Ladbrokes can report that one punter has placed a bet of £1,000 sterling at 16/1 on Robson".

John Toshack has ruled himself out of the running for the Republic job by taking over as coach of Italian Serie B side Catania. The Welshman has coached in his home country, France, Turkey, Portugal and Spain.
