Campaign Trail: CIAN NIHILL's sideways look at the presidential election
THE CAMPAIGN has truly begun – now that we have our first election song for a candidate. Surprisingly it wasn’t an updated version of Michael D Rocking in the Dáil by The Saw Doctors. Instead, a young supporter of Seán Gallagher, Zena Donnelly, composed her melody over the music behind the Justin Bieber summer hit Baby. Gallagher tweeted that it “would put a smile on anyone’s face”.

LESS THAN a week after Éamon Dunphy said he may have breached the broadcasting code by declaring support for Martin McGuinness, Gay Byrne may have made a similar faux pas. Listeners of Lyric FM’s Sunday with Gay Byrne got an earful of Uncle Gaybo’s resolute defence of Dana Rosemary Scallon’s Euroscepticism. “They are all laughing at Dana – the difference between her and 99 per cent of the population is that she has been there [working in European institutions]. She is actually talking about more important matters than most of the others.”
