Tennis: Seeds Andy Roddick, Ivan Ljubicic and Gaston Gaudio all cruised through the opening stages at the Australian Open.
American number two seed Roddick, the 2003 US Open champion, did not have it all his own way against South African Wesley Moodie but moved through nonetheless with a 7-5 6-3 6-2 triumph.
"I knew Wesley was just going to come out and really take it to me, be aggressive and try to get in as much as possible," Roddick said. "Luckily for me I played three matches, including Kooyong, before this where I got to hit some balls. So I wasn't expecting a lot of rhythm out there today."
Croatian Davis Cup hero Ljubicic, the seventh seed, had no trouble dispatching German Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5 6-2 6-1, and eighth-seeded Argentinian Gaudio breezed through with a ruthless 6-3 6-2 6-3 victory over German Lars Burgsmuller.
Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Serena Williams, all previous winners, have moved through to the third round on day three.
Top seed Davenport had to overcome a brave challenge from Croatian Karolina Sprem before emerging with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win, while Belgian eighth seed Henin-Hardenne was also forced to work hard for her 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 defeat of Hana Sromova.
Williams, the 2003 and 2005 champion, kept her quest for a third Australian Open crown alive with a routine 6-3 6-1 demolition of Frenchwoman Camille Pin.
