Biggs 'due to leave Brazil tonight'

Crowds have gathered in Rio de Janeiro to see Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs leave Brazil for the UK.

Crowds have gathered in Rio de Janeiro to see Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs leave Brazil for the UK.

Biggs has been issued with an emergency passport which will allow him to make a single, one-way trip back to Britain after 35 years on the run. The flight is due to leave at 10 p.m.

A BBCreporter in Brazil said the flight appeared to have been delayed and there were rumours Biggs was too ill to travel. The Sunnewspaper has chartered a Dassault 14-seater jet to bring him back.

Biggs, 71, is expected to be arrested as soon as he sets foot on British soil.

The BBC Newswebsite said: "One unconfirmed report suggests the upheaval surrounding his return may have proved exhausting and he needed to rest.

"Another rumour is that the Brazilians might be insisting on a medical examination to ensure he's fit to travel."

It is also thought to be possible that officials are trying to satisfy themselves that Biggs's departure is voluntary and that he is not being coerced to leave.

A police spokesman in Rio said: "The British consulate has told us he will leave at 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. Irish time) on Sunday."

If correct, this would suggest Biggs would touch down in the UK early on Monday morning, although other reports have suggested an earlier arrival.

An answerphone message at Biggs' Rio home said he would be "away until the 12th" before directing messages to his official website.
