The father of Billy Wright, the murdered leader of the Loyalist Volunteer Force, said last night that he was "repulsed" by the killings carried out in revenge for his son's death.

Mr David Wright made an emotional appeal for the murders to end in a programme screened by Ulster Television.

Three Catholics have been murdered by LVF gunmen since Wright was shot by an INLA inmate in the Maze Prison on December 27th. Overall, the LVF is believed to have been responsible for the murder of more than 40 Catholics.

The father of the man known as "King Rat" said of the revenge killings: "They're abhorrent, abhorrent, abhorrent, without hesitation, abhorrent - they're abhorrent."

He told UTV's Insight programme: "I don't believe in any kind of loss of life. We can't go on with this situation of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth until we run out of teeth. We must stop. From the outset, the situation should have been handled differently. It should have been handled properly by the politicians, but my generation did not have the type of politicians who could take control of the situation.

"As a result, we have had 30 years of suffering, and who is going to gain anything out of it? I did not gain anything out of it."

Mr Wright's appeal for the killings to end came a day after Terry Enright, the most recent victim of the LVF, was buried in west Belfast.

Mr Wright called for an independent inquiry into the killing of his son in the Maze and said that any internal inquiry would be a "whitewash". He said that he wanted to know how the INLA knew his son would be on his way to a visit which had been arranged only the night before.

"My son never had a Saturday morning visit. His visits always were in the afternoon. But the time of his visit was changed on the previous day to 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. The people who carried out this act knew precisely when he was going to have his visit."

Mr Wright said that he had information that a wire in the area had been cut 23 hours earlier. "It begs answers and I want a public inquiry", he added.
