Second place in the 40-strong field went to 10-1 shot What's Up Boys, partnered by Richard Johnson, with 8-1 favourite Blowing Wind, the mount of Tony McCoy in third.

Bindaree, a chance ride for Culloty, fought back in the final stages to regain the lead and score by one and three quarter lengths.

Winning jockey Culloty was celebrating his second big succcess in less than a month after capturing the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Best Mate.

In an eventful race only around a quarter of the 40-strong field completed the course with the first fence producing many casualties.

However, Culloty was only booked for the mount this week after original jockey Jamie Goldstein broke his leg in a fall a Ludlow on Wednesday, managed to keep his mount clear of all the trouble.

"I feel for Jamie," he said.

"It's bad enough having a broken leg but to miss a race like that is every jockey's nightmare."

The Irishman was concerned by the presence of an earlier faller as they approached the final fence.

"Because of a loose horse I couldn't kick on in front and as a result I got cut for a bit of speed.

"The second horse came by us and for a split second I though we were beat. But I then got him on the rails he was as brave as they come."

By winning the gruelling marathon Culloty joined a small band of jockeys who have landed the Gold Cup/Grand National double.

"It's unbelievable," he commented on the feat. "I'd like to thank Mark Pitman who released me from the ride on Browjoshy."
