A police officer was taken to hospital with head wounds after more than 100 Birmingham City supporters ran riot following trouble at a nightclub, British police said today.

The fans were staying in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, ahead of their side's Division One play-off final against Norwich in Cardiff today.

Trouble broke out at a nightclub in Beach Road at 10.30pm last night, said an Avon and Somerset Police spokesman.

Police called to the area were confronted with "one of the worst scenes they had seen for some time", the spokesman said.

Extra officers were called in from five surrounding districts to cope with the disorder.

One officer was knocked unconscious when he was hit on the head by a flying bottle. He was taken to hospital and discharged after treatment for facial injuries.

The spokesman said the nightclub was cleared but there were further outbreaks of sporadic violence through out the seafront area. The area was finally declared quiet at 3am.

Three men were arrested, one for assaulting police officer and two for public order offences and assault.
