British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair was flying back to Britain today after a successful summit with US President Mr George W Bush.

After their first face-to-face summit at the presidential retreat of Camp David, both vowed to maintain and strengthen the "special relationship" between their two countries.

And they stressed they had already begun a strong personal relationship which will continue.

"If either of us get in a bind, there will be a friend on the other end of the phone," Mr Bush told a news conference.

Mr Blair added: "Our relationship will carry on and strengthen in the years to come."

Mr Bush said Mr Blair had reassured him that plans for an EU rapid reaction force would not harm NATO and Mr Blair said he welcomed discussions on America's plans for a controversial National Missile Defence system.
