Mr William Hague has acknowledged he will have to take the blame if the Conservatives go down to another heavy election defeat.

Despite the latest crop of opinion polls continuing to show Labour well ahead, the Tory leader insisted his party could still win.

But he made clear also he would take responsibility in the event of a poor result for the party.

"I am the leader of the party. I get the credit for its successes and the blame for its failures and I am very comfortable with that. But we continue to fight to win on Thursday," he told BBC1's Breakfast with Frost.

He insisted the election was not a foregone conclusion.

"I don't agree the polls can't all be wrong. The polls have all been wrong on many previous occasions," he said.

"It has not been decided yet. This election is not decided until the votes are cast and counted."

Mr Hague again sounded a warning about the dangers of another Labour landslide.

"We have never had a government that has so sidelined Parliament, so arrogantly abused the democratic institutions of this country," he said.

"That is how they have behaved when they had a landslide the last time."
