BMW drove on to new records in sales and earnings in 2001 thanks to unbroken demand for its premium-brand cars, and the German car maker said today it hoped to stay in the fast lane again this year.

BMW said in a letter to shareholders that group sales amounted to €37.85 billion last year, an increase of 7.1 per cent from the year-earlier figure.

In terms of the number of cars sold, that meant BMW handed over a total 905,657 cars to customers worldwide in 2001, 10.2 per cent more than in 2000.

"2001 was by far the most successful year in the history of the BMW group," chairman Mr Joachim Milberg.
