British Nuclear Fuels Ltd has obtained a High Court injunction in London preventing Green peace interfering with the forthcoming sea shipment of mix oxide nuclear fuel (MOX) from its Sellafield facility to Japan.

The move came after the environmental group refused to give assurances it would not interfere with a shipment due to leave the port of Barrow. The MV Greenpeace is currently anchored off the Cumbrian coast and has on board a group of environmentalists including the Green TD, Mr Trevor Sargent. He said yesterday the shipment "heralds a new and frightening era of nuclear proliferation".

A BNFL spokesman said the company had no problem with peaceful and lawful protest. "However, we would not want the safety of the ship's crew, the escort team or any other person put in danger by some irresponsible media stunt by Greenpeace."
