The Irish Medicines Board has announced that it has begun a consultation process with interested parties on a licensing scheme for herbal medicines.

Following a request from the Department of Health and Children the board has proposed setting up a scientific committee of experts in the area. It has also called for submissions for a framework document from all interested parties, including members of the public.

These should address the kind of products which should be licensed under such a scheme; the mechanisms by which such a scheme could be established; the role of a scientific panel; and suggestions for possible members of it.

Issues to be addressed include the quality of the products, safety, efficacy, the reporting of adverse events and quality defects, packaging and labelling, advertising and licensing. The closing date for receipt of submissions is October 31st.
