The RUC has started a murder investigation after the body of a man was discovered in north-west Belfast on Wednesday night.

The man was named as Mr David Clark (26), who lived alone in the predominantly loyalist Forthriver Road area. He had been viciously beaten, and his flat had been ransacked.

Mr Clark was last seen walking home shortly before midnight on Tuesday. His body was found by friends on Wednesday evening, after they forced their way into his flat where they discovered him in his bedroom.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan said it was too early to speculate on a motive for the assault.

"This was an absolutely horrific attack. The poor man was very savagely beaten. At this stage we believe he was probably beaten to death.

"I would appeal to anyone who may know anything or may have seen any suspicious activity in this area, or may have seen anyone with blood on their clothing, to contact us," he added.

Mr Clark's mother and other relatives were said to be in shock yesterday. Neighbours described him as a "quiet and popular" man and said they were completely at a loss to understand why anybody would have subjected him to such a savage assault.

Loyalist sources in the area said they were not aware that Mr Clark had been involved in any of the paramilitary organisations.
