The body of a man in his early 20s was recovered from the river Liffey in Dublin yesterday after a major search involving a Garda helicopter and divers from the sub-aqua unit.
The search was launched at about 12.20 p.m. after the man was seen falling into the river at Ellis Quay Bridge near the Civic Offices. A second man who had gone to his rescue was saved from drowning by a team from the Trinity College Rowing Club by members of a rowing club who were training on the river.
The passer-by, described as in his 40s, jumped into the Liffey after the man but got into difficulties in strong currents. He was recovering last night in St James's Hospital.
