Searchers have located the body of a missing man a week after he disappeared.

Alan Lyons (25), from Rathmanna, Thurles, Co Tipperary, went missing in the Coole Mountain area of Dunmanway, Co Cork last Sunday.

He was socialising with friends when he suddenly disappeared.

He last made contact with his family in a distressed state on Sunday at 9.30am and told them he was lost.

He was an insulin-dependent diabetic, which prompted serious concerns for his safety.

Mr Lyons was visiting friends in west Cork and was last seen walking in Moneyreague, around 13km northwest of Dunmanway.

An extensive search was undertaken by gardaí, Irish Coast Guard and members of west Cork search and rescue teams.

Helicopters, naval divers and volunteers joined with other local agencies in their efforts to locate the missing man.

Hundreds of gardaí and volunteers were involved in the search, which involved combing a mountainside and forest outside Dunmanway.

Yesterday, shortly before midday, a search team found his body.

He was located at Farranheeny, a short distance from where he disappeared. Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious.

The man's body was removed to Cork University Hospital, where the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster, will carry out a postmortem tomorrow morning.

Supt Pat Maher, who was involved in the search, said he wished to thank all those who had taken part.
