The Government should appoint a Minister or State with responsibility for the protection and integration of Ireland's new communities, the Refugee Information Service has said.

Chairman Ben Howe called on the Government to introduce a new asylum process and to protect the rights of those who seek a new life in Ireland.

Welcoming the appointment of Mr Brian Lenihan as Minister for Justice, Mr Howe said: "The 30th Dáil and Government marks a new era in Irish politics. We now have a very real opportunity to adopt a fresh and open approach towards protection and the integration of our new communities in Ireland."

Mr Howe called on the Government to allow people to bring their family members to Ireland after they are granted refugee status.
